TED TALK : QUESTIONS 1-10

1.) What question does Erik pose to the audience?
     Is it photography?

2.) What was Erik's first real passion?
Erik's first real passion was drawing.

3.) What conception of photography did Erik previously hold?
You just had to be at the right place at the right time.

4.) How did this inspire him?
He wanted the process to continue after he "pressed the trigger".

5.) What "common goal" do Erik's photos have?
To make something impossible look realistic.

6.) Define realism as used in this context.
To make something look like it's seamlessly in a space
without the viewer knowing how it was composed.

7.) What principles does he adhere to when creating an image?
Image should have the same perspective and lighting.

8.) Why is it easier to create a place rather than to find a place?
So that you do not have to get rid of some of your
     original ideas.

9.) How does he plan the photos?
He starts with a sketch of his "place".
(basically a drawing of his entire idea)

10.) What is his conclusion?
"The tools are out there, and the only thing that
     limits us is our imagination."

Gottfried Helnwein Image (Continued)

The change in the viewpoint does not change my interpretation/‘guess’ of the image because i was correct. I originally thought that the photo was just a regular billboard sign but it is touching the ground near the pier/a body of water. The scale is a lot larger than I originally thought. The size of the photo makes me think about the struggles of installing a giant billboard photo. I believe that the girl suggests that she is lost in materialistic goods, seeing as she is in a large metropolitan city.

Minimalism Photography Phase 1

1. Minimalism in photography is a style or technique that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity. 2. Ideally, the subject in the photo should be simple and not contain anything that would make the entire photo too complex.  The pale orange/yellow hue contrasts sharply with the dark brown shadows of the birds in the water. It is not too complex and it is relaxing to look at. The photo is also fogged over just enough to prevent the viewer from seeing any background aspects in the photo.  The light snow and the single trail of footsteps is pleasing because of the fact that those are the two major aspects of the photo and not much else is in it (besides the tree). It also makes you think about who or what might have made those footprints in the snow. The dark bench that is covered in the snow is so simple but it makes you feel almost alone. It could either be a bad feeling or a good one, and the pile of snow on top of the bench tells you that nobody h...

Gottfried Helnwein Response

In the photo, there is a man rock climbing down a woman's zoomed in face with a long cable. He is climbing right next to her eyebrows. The scale between the man and the woman's face is very large. I believe that the man is scaling/fixing a billboard. I believe this because the woman's face doesn't look like it has enough depth compared to the climber. Because he is on a long cable and the woman's face doesn't have a lot of depth, it makes it appear as a person is simply climbing a blown up photo of a woman. I think it is both a "documentary" and an abstract image. The quality of the photo shows a more creative and abstract visual. For some parts of the picture, i think it was photoshopped to make the woman's face less "airbrushed". The meaning behind this photo, in my opinion, is 'perspective' and how you actually view the world in your own eyes. The intent was to fool the person's eye/mind and make them believe they are see...
